2009-2010 Secondary School Program
The Muse Machine has developed a reputation for excellence over the past 27 years. Many of our students have gone on to successful performing careers, but this is not the success we most value. Every student and every educator benefit from participating in our programming.
WHAT IS IT?
The total program is structured for 4-6 performances during an academic year. The performances take place in the schools and include as many interactive elements as possible. We work with every kind of secondary school: public, private, parochial, and charter.
In recent years performances have included original plays commissioned from The Human Race Theatre Company on topics ranging from Mark Twain to Shakespeare to Greek mythology; a pair of professional trumpeters from the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra who present an art history slide show as they play music from those same historical periods; and an actor named David Epley, "Doktor Kaboom," a German scientist who makes students laugh wildly while they learn about simple machines and the scientific method. Each performance is aligned with Ohio Department of Education Academic Content Standards.
For what it would cost to import just one of our professional performances, your school may schedule six wildly different performances, providing critical introductions for your students to all the art forms Dayton’s professional arts community has to offer. Thousands of current arts lovers were first exposed to the professional performing arts when they were students through Muse Machine’s nationally recognized program.
THE TEACHER
Schools in the Muse Machine Secondary Program are represented by at least one teacher. In many cases, two or more participate. The more the merrier! These teachers serve as Muse Club Advisors and coordinate Muse activities in the school. They also help arrange student trips to downtown Dayton for performances at the Schuster Center, Victoria Theatre, and Loft Theatre. Throughout the year, Muse Machine offers training opportunities for teachers to learn how to integrate the arts into their regular classroom instruction in all subject areas. These opportunities include our annual Advanced Teacher Training Seminar, held in cultural capitals like New York City and Vienna, Austria; our immersive four-day Summer Workshop; as well as shorter workshops during the school year with local luminaries from the arts and education communities.
THE STUDENT
All students in a member school have the opportunity to join Muse Machine for additional arts experiences beyond the in-school programs scheduled by their Muse Club Advisor. As student members, they may audition for our productions, take part in arts workshops throughout the year, purchase discounted tickets to performances by premiere local arts organizations, and attend social events. Muse Machine charges only $11 for this membership.
